Music and sounds have the power to effect one’s thoughts and emotions. Certain tones, pitches, lyrics, and melodies can invoke happiness, sadness, relief, and confidence. To achieve these emotions with music, many people find it helpful to enroll into music therapy. According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals. These goals may be to manage stress, promote wellness, alleviate pain, enhance memory, or express feelings. Music therapy is widely used in hospital and other inpatient settings, furthermore in outpatient settings and personal use. It is studied in patients and family with cardiac issues, cancer, psychiatric cases,†¦show more content†¦Music therapy is not just about classical music, or soft lyrical content. The use of nature sounds can also help in music therapy. In a study done with cardiac patients in Minnesota, in which there were 2 groups, a music group and control group, of post-cardiac procedure patients were studied. For both groups, a study coordinator would obtain measurements of pain, anxiety, satisfaction, and relaxation orally with a visual analog scale (VAS). The patients were all put in the same scenario- comfortably in bed, quiet room, alone- for 20 minutes for 3 days after their cardiac procedure. However, in the music group, they had the choice of listening to one of four CDs with nature sounds playing during these 20 minutes. At the end of each session, it was found that the music group had a decrease in overall pain score, anxiety, and blood pressure, with an increase in relaxation score and overall satisfaction when compared to the control group. (Cutshall, 2011). This study made me think of a spa, where they play relaxing nature sounds and will usually have a waterfall or something similar in the lobby or spa room. Elements of song experiences--cognitive stimulation, the building of relationships, si nging, and listening--can provide frameworks for tension release, integration, and pleasure. (Bailey, 1984).
